5 Strategies For Adding Seniors In Management In Start-Up Company.

In My Journey As A Founder Of A Proprietary Firm To Being Director At 3 Private Limited Companies And Now Owner Of 2 Proprietary Firms, I Have Always Found It Challenging & Difficult To Employ Right Kind Of People At The Senior Management Level. It Is So Very Essential That The People Employed At The Decision-Making Positions Are In Sync With The Company’s Policies And Culture. Let Me Share Few Pointers From This Journey Of Mine.

5 Strategies For Adding Seniors In Management In Start-Up Company.

Adding Senior Person At Management Level To A Growing Start-Up Is One Of The Most Dramatic & Challenging Changes To Make At An Early Stage. Things Will Change And Some Of The Original Employees Are Likely To Feel Neglected & Left Out Of The Process.

Here Are The Six Considerations Necessary To Keep The Company Intact And Ensure Everyone Is On The Same Page When You Add Senior Person At Management Level To A Start-Up.

1. Be Transparent.

When Building A Company During The Early Days, Let Junior And Mid-Level Employees Know That At Some Point In The Future The Organization Is Likely To Bring In Senior People At Management Level To Add Experience And Wisdom In The Process Of Growing Company. This Will Create Realistic Expectations And Gives Employees A Vision For The Company. It Is Advisable To Have A Clear Vision & Mission Statement For The Company And Displayed Prominently In The Office. This Will Not Only Keep The Teams Motivated And Move In The Same Direction But Also Let Them Know What Company Expects From Them And In Return What To Expect From The Company.

2. Be Patient.

Many Founders Fall Into The Trap Of Adding Senior Management At A Very Early Stage. If A Founder Hires Senior Management Level Employees Before Figuring Out The Business, It May Burn A Lot Of Cash And Equity With The Wrong Kind Of People In Place, For The Simple Fact That The People Employed At Senior Level May Not Be In Alignment With The Company’s Growth Path. Instead, Build A Start-Up With A Team Of Junior To Mid-Level Overachievers. This Will Help In Working As A Team Without Major Ego Clashes And Heartburns. It May So Happen That Senior Level Employee May Not Be As Inclined And Motivated In Growing The Company As The Junior And Mid-Level Employees Will Be, Especially In A Start-Up Company. Once The Basics Are Figured Out And Path Is Set For The Company, Only Then Start Adding Senior People At Management Level To Add That Experience & Wisdom To Keep The Company On The Right Path Of Growth.

3. Make It Inclusive (Involve The Team).

After Meeting With A Promising Candidate For The Senior Position, Have That Person Meet With The Current Team And Get Their Feedback. Employees Will Offer A Great Perspective, Especially When It Comes To Culture And Fit. It Will Also Make Them Fell Special And Assure Them That Their Welfare Is Considered By The Top Management While Employing People At Management Level. No Matter How Badly A Founder Wants To Complete Building The Management Team, They Must Listen Carefully To The Existing Team And Any Objections They May Have.

4. Do Not Hasten.

Even If A Founder Is Excited About A Prospective New Hire, They Should Take Their Time In Making An Offer. I Can Say From My Personal Experience Of Being Director At 3 Companies And Owner Of 2 Proprietary Firms And Having Interviewed Hundreds Of Candidates That, It Always Pays To Meet As Many People As Possible, Even If Founder Believes That They’ve Already Met The Right Person. Also, Be Sure To Ask Around About The Candidate. It’s Amazing What One Can Find Out Through Backchannels About The True Nature Of A Person.

5. Onboard With Care.

Put Great Effort Into Properly Onboarding The Senior After Making A Hire. While He Or She May Know The Business And Industry, Every Company Has Its Own Systems & Culture. Just Because A Hire Has Been Made Doesn’t Mean They Will Stay, So Stay Close To The New Executive, Especially During The First Few Months. Communicate Regularly To Understand How The Senior Is Settling In. And Most Important Ensure That The Existing Team Makes Them Feel That They Are Part Of The Team.

By Visualizing & Preparing The Organization Structure In Advance And Running A Good Hiring Process, A Start-up Can Add Senior Executives With A Minimum Of Disruption While Maximizing Growth.
